About the museum

The archaeological museum “Filippo Ferrari” opened in 1999 as a temporary exhibition, was later turned into a permanent display and subsequently expanded. It currently comprises six rooms, with two more being set up, and is named after the parish priest Don Filippo Ferrari, who excavated the Comino necropolis at the beginning of the 20th century.

The entrance hall holds the surviving materials from those excavations and documentation from the parish archive: photographs, notes and drawings by the priest, together with the manuscript of the book published in 1913. The following rooms display the grave goods of the oldest phase of the necropolis, excavated between 1998 and 2005, with tombs under stone tumuli of the 9th century BC: male, female and child burials with weapons, large fibulae and jewellery in bronze and vitreous paste.

Beneath the floor of room 2 the Tomb 38, known as the “warrior of Comino”, is reconstructed at full size. It is followed by the grave goods of the Archaic (7th–6th century BC) and Hellenistic (5th–3rd century BC) periods and a stone copy of the stele of Guardiagrele. Since the museum opened, the municipality has entrusted its management to the Archeoclub di Guardiagrele, which assists visitors free of charge.
