About the museum

The Antiquarium comunale is located in Collemancio, a hamlet of Cannara, in the 14th-century Palazzo del Podestà. It holds material recovered from surveys of the area and from the excavations of Urvinum Hortense, which are still ongoing. The ancient settlement lies a little north-east of the village, on the summit of the Pieve plateau.

Urvinum Hortense was a small Roman municipium, planned in the 2nd century BC and grown mainly between the late 1st century BC and the early 2nd century AD; systematic investigations are carried out by the University of Perugia. The town declined in the 5th century, but the area remained inhabited in the early Middle Ages, as the remains of the early Christian basilica of Santa Maria de Orbinum show.

The small but significant selection of objects illustrates the phases of occupation revealed by the excavation and surface surveys. Notable items include a bronze figure of an offerer from the 6th–5th century BC, typical of Umbrian sanctuaries, which attests to pre-Roman worship at the site, and a group of architectural terracottas that decorated the façades of the temple uncovered in the excavation. The mosaic floor with Nilotic scenes from the baths is displayed instead in the Museo della Città e del Territorio in Cannara.
