About the museum
The Antiquarium comunale di Corciano opened in 2009 and brings together finds collected in the area since the 1990s, only a small part of which had been kept in rooms of the town hall. The museum is organised in three chronological sections, with up-to-date educational displays.
The palaeontology section presents fossil ammonites from the Lower Jurassic, from Migiana, and mammal remains from the Lower Pleistocene, found at Ellera. The prehistory and protohistory section, with stone tools collected at various sites, offers an overview of Umbria from the Upper Palaeolithic to the Iron Age and includes two cinerary urns that testify to the spread of Villanovan culture between Lake Trasimeno and Perugia.
The classical archaeology section opens with a reconstruction of the two princely chariots from the Archaic tomb at Castel San Mariano (6th century BC), and continues with places of worship, where offerings were made for health, fertility and livestock. For the Hellenistic period, several tombs from the Etruscan necropolises of Strozzacapponi and Fosso Rigo are reconstructed at full scale, with their grave goods in their original positions. The route closes with finds from the Roman villa of Palazzo Grande and two so-called 'alla cappuccina' tombs.
