About the museum
The castle of Pieve del Vescovo stands in the valley opposite the historic centre of Corciano and is one of the most significant architectural monuments in the Perugia area. First mentioned in a bull of Innocent III of 1206 as a church dedicated to St John the Baptist, it was turned into a castle with crenellated towers and walls in 1396; in 1397 the marriage of Biordo Michelotti and Giovanna Orsini was celebrated there, and in 1409 the condottiero Alberico da Barbiano was buried there.
In 1453 the bishop of Perugia, Giacomo Vannucci, had an agricultural settlement started around the fortified manor. In the Renaissance the fortress lost its defensive character and became a noble residence with a garden, regularly used by the bishops of Perugia during their stays; the name derives from Cardinal Fulvio della Corgna, bishop of Perugia. The building has a quadrangular plan with four massive corner towers.
Some of its rooms were frescoed by the Mannerist painter Taddeo Zuccari: notable are the chapel of St John the Baptist, the cardinal's coat of arms, the stables and the prisons. The castle houses the Museo diocesano diffuso di Pieve del Vescovo.
