About the museum
The villa was built around the mid-16th century by Cardinal Fulvio Giulio della Corgna, nephew of Pope Julius III, as a summer residence on the hill. The design of the whole complex is attributed by some to Galeazzo Alessi, by others to Vignola. The palace, compact and rectangular in plan, rises over five levels: basement, ground floor, piano nobile (main floor), second floor and attic.
In 1645 it passed to the Perugian Oddi-Baglioni family, who in the 17th and 18th centuries softened the austerity of the original 16th-century layout with corner turrets and transformed the surroundings. In the 19th century the park, extending over about 13 hectares, was enriched with staircases, fountains, statues and balustrades, along with a lemon house, a fishpond and grottoes. In the 20th century the villa hosted artists and writers, including Giuseppe Ungaretti.
Because of the high costs of upkeep, the owners sold it to the State in 1996. Today the villa and its historic park are a State cultural site, open to the public on set days, with guided tours.
