About the museum
The municipal antiquarium holds the results of research carried out in the territory of Loreto Aprutino, which has brought to light evidence from prehistory to the Middle Ages. It was founded in 1998, the same year as the Fondazione dei Musei Civici, and remained closed for many years because it was unsafe after the L'Aquila earthquake of 6 April 2009; it reopened in 2023.
Human presence in the area is documented from the Palaeolithic onwards. Grave goods, weapons, pottery, jewellery and cult objects show the refined way of life reached by the Vestini between the 7th and 5th centuries BC. Numerous finds from the Roman period also belong here, including the remains of the sanctuary of Feronia, with objects from its votive deposit, an altar, a statuette of Jupiter and, above all, the bronze fragments of the goddess's cult statue.
Evidence from the imperial period comes from the rustic villas scattered across the territory: mosaics, polychrome plaster, columns, imported pottery and everyday objects. The Antiquarium is part of the Musei Civici di Loreto Aprutino, a complex run by a foundation, together with the Museo Acerbo, the Museo dell'Olio and the Mostra permanente del precinema.
