About the museum
The Museo Acerbo, opened on 19 February 2000, brings together three ancient and important collections of Abruzzo majolica, enlarged by acquisitions and donations from Baron Giacomo Acerbo dell'Aterno (Loreto Aprutino 1888 – Rome 1969). It is one of the museums of the Musei Civici di Loreto Aprutino complex, run by a foundation established in 1998.
The collection makes it possible to follow the historical and stylistic evolution of the workshops of Castelli, driven by dynasties of artists and potters, and of the other production centres derived from or influenced by them. It spans from the early 16th century to the affirmation, between the 17th and 18th centuries, of the illustrative and naturalistic vein of Baroque taste.
Among the works are rare examples in the compendiary style, a large inkwell dated 1588 and an important collection of pharmacy jars and fine majolica in rocaille taste, with works by masters such as Carl'Antonio, Anastasio and Liborio Grue.
