About the museum

The antiquarium was set up in the mid-1990s in the south-east tower of the castle of Pievefavera, a hamlet of Caldarola, to display and preserve finds previously placed on the church forecourt. It collects materials from the adjacent archaeological area, occasional recoveries and test excavations by the Soprintendenza, which attest to occupation from the middle Republican period to the imperial age.

The new premises, opposite the Roman rustic villa excavated on the shore of Lake Caccamo, opened on 24 April 2008. After renovation and re-display work, the antiquarium reopened to the public in April 2025.

The display cases follow an arrangement by material and chronology: black-glaze pottery with Latin graffiti from the late 3rd century BC, Italic terra sigillata, oil lamps, thin-walled and common ware, metal objects, glass and a small collection of coins. The last case presents finds from the rustic villa excavated in 2004, with a tomb of the cappuccina type (covered with tiles), a fragment of a funerary stele and a dolium (large storage jar). Part of the lapidarium is located in the polygonal tower of the city walls, near the church of Santa Maria Assunta.
