About the museum
The castle dominates the centre of Caldarola from the slopes of the Colcù hill. Its origins date back to around the second half of the 9th century; towards the end of the 16th century Cardinal Giovanni Evangelista Pallotta had it transformed into a summer residence in Renaissance forms. Among the illustrious guests recorded were Pope Clement VIII and Queen Christina of Sweden.
From 1885 Count Desiderio Pallotta, following the guidance of his father Giuseppe, rebuilt parts of the complex, including a tower, the drawbridge and the merlons. In 1921 the Ministry of Public Instruction recognised the castle as a building of major historical and artistic interest; in 1928 a tower was dedicated to war veterans.
Inside, at least twenty rooms could be visited, including the carriage hall, the armoury, the kitchen, the library, a dining room with 18th-century ceramics from the Marche and a small chapel, with many original furnishings and hangings from the 16th and 17th centuries and frescoed friezes by the De Magistris school depicting the visit of Clement VIII. Today the castle is closed to the public because of damage caused by the earthquake.
