About the museum
The Roccagloriosa municipal archaeological museum, named after Antonella Fiammenghi and previously known as the Antiquarium, holds finds from the Lucanian period discovered in the municipal area. The archaeological site, on the plateau above the Capitenali ridge, shows visits already in the 2nd millennium BC, but a true settlement only took shape from the 5th century BC and developed in the 4th and 3rd centuries BC, when it was surrounded by a limestone city wall about 1.2 km long.
Excavations carried out between 1982 and 1991 by a mission from the University of Alberta (Canada) documented the layout of the settlement, with houses arranged in regular blocks, and the necropolises, including tomb 6, known as the “princely” tomb, with a set of Etruscan-Campanian bronzes. Among the finds stands a bronze tablet with an Oscan inscription that records rules of civic life.
The display cases show funerary goods, objects in gold, silver and bronze, and finely crafted jewellery, such as a necklace with pendants and a bracelet of interlaced serpents.
