About the museum

The Sala Consilina Archaeological Museum, formerly the Antiquarium, is housed in the Cappuccini complex, which hosts the town’s Polo Culturale. It documents two phases of the ancient history of the area: a farming presence from the Eneolithic of the mid-4th millennium BC, attested by the remains of dwellings and by pottery and early metal objects found in the Capo la Piazza locality, and the community that lived there between the 9th and 5th century BC.

The objects on display are a selection from the grave goods of more than two thousand tombs in the Iron Age necropolises at San Rocco and Sant’Antonio. Some of the most prestigious finds, such as the material from the princely “tomba Boezio”, are kept in museums outside the town.

Material excavated by the heritage authority from 1970 onwards was held for a long time in the state museums of Paestum and Pontecagnano. From 1978 the municipality worked to bring the finds back to Sala, and in 1983 the state Antiquarium was inaugurated. The recent restoration of the Cappuccini complex has expanded and improved the exhibition spaces, which are arranged in chronological order.
