About the museum
The diocesan museum of Teggiano, a section of the diocese of Teggiano-Policastro, is housed in the former church of San Pietro, built on the remains of an ancient temple dedicated to Aesculapius, the god of medicine, still visible along the right side of the façade.
The entrance is preceded by a staircase of white stone and by a three-arched portico, beneath which opens a Renaissance portal commissioned in 1476 by the Sienese Ambrogio Malavolta and surmounted by a fresco of the Crucifixion of Tuscan workmanship.
The building preserves two remarkable tombs: that of the soldier Bartolomeo Francone (1401), in Gothic taste, in the chapel of the Addolorata, and that of the archdeacon Guglielmo Rossi of Marsico (died 1512), in the chapel of Saint Paul. The museum also holds archaeological finds of various periods, frescoes, paintings and sculptures, including a Crucifixion detached from the church of Sant’Angelo, datable to the first half of the 15th century.
