About the museum

The museum is dedicated to the relationship between people and plants and to knowledge of the uses of herbs over time. It is located in the historic centre of Teggiano, next to the former convent of the Santissima Pietà, and opened in June 1999.

The route includes a reconstruction of a medieval apothecary, based on a spice shop documented in Diano in 1480, with spices of plant, animal and mineral origin. Other sections cover natural medicines, pharmaceutical preparations and herbal medicine, folk medicine, the herbarium with its classifications and floristic maps, and a seed bank with ancient germplasm from the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park.

Outdoors is the Viridarium, a space with local and medicinal plants, including species that were used during sieges in the fortified medieval villages.
