About the museum
The Antiquarium statale of Numana, at Via la Fenice 4, opened in 1974 and holds finds from Numana and Sirolo, one of the most important centres of the Piceni in the protohistoric period. Since December 2014 it has been run by the Ministry of Culture through the Polo museale delle Marche, which in December 2019 became the Direzione regionale Musei nazionali, now based in the Palazzo Ducale in Urbino.
The museum was recently redisplayed over two floors under the title “Regalità e splendore. Un antico porto sull'Adriatico” (Royalty and Splendour: An Ancient Port on the Adriatic). The route tells the story of Monte Conero and ancient Numana from prehistory to the Roman period, through the main archaeological sites of the area, and includes many objects restored in recent years.
Among the most important pieces are the grave goods of the so-called “Regina di Sirolo” (Queen of Sirolo), found in a female tomb with a circular structure at the Pini di Sirolo, and the grave goods of a Picene warrior, with parts of two chariots, jewellery, vessels and weapons. One room is devoted to the 19th-century collection of Girolamo Rilli, while other displays cover the symposium, the spread of amber and Upper Adriatic vessels. Traces of the Roman municipium that replaced the Picene settlement are also present. The visit can be completed with the Pini di Sirolo necropolis, where the remains of the Queen's tomb are visible.
