About the museum
Beneath the historic centre of Camerano, in the Parco del Conero, extends an underground network with a labyrinthine layout and several often interconnected entrances, carved into the sandstone under the area known as the Rupe del Sassone, between Piazza Roma and the streets Maratti and San Francesco. It was explored and studied by the Gruppo di Ricerca Storica del Conero di Camerano between 1976 and 1983.
It was thought that these were sandstone quarries or storerooms, but friezes, ornamental motifs and religious symbols suggest places of worship or assembly. The caves are believed to have been dug in the medieval period as a refuge from armed raids. In July 1944, during the Second World War, the population took shelter there.
Today the caves are run for tourism and can only be visited with a guide, departing from the ticket office at Piazza Roma 26; a virtual tour usable with VR headsets is also available.
