About the museum
The museum opened at the end of 1998 in the Episcopio of Osimo, beside the co-cathedral of San Leopardo, expanding and reorganizing an earlier collection assembled by Mons. Carlo Grillantini and housed in the church of San Giovanni Battista (the baptistery). Since 1986, with the union of the dioceses of Ancona and Osimo, it has been run by the Archdiocese of Ancona-Osimo.
The route occupies seventeen rooms arranged on art-historical criteria and tells the story of the Christian community of a town in the Marche that was a Roman municipium and later an episcopal and cardinal see. The layout was designed by the architect Luca Schiavoni of Jesi.
Among the main works are a silver plaque with Saint Leopardo, the polyptych by Pietro di Domenico da Montepulciano (1418), the polyptych by Giovan Battista Franco, known as Semolei (1547), canvases by Simone de Magistris and Girolamo Siciolante, a triptych from the Cretan school by Georghi Klontzas, vestments, a 17th-century positive organ and a reliquary of the True Cross linked to Bernini’s circle. The museum forms a single itinerary with the cathedral and the baptistery.
