About the museum
Amiternum was a town of the Sabines, inhabited since the Neolithic, later conquered by the Romans and organised as a praefectura (prefecture). It developed along the Via Cecilia, with secondary roads, an aqueduct and public and private spaces, and grew monumentally with the construction of the theatre in the second half of the 1st century BC and of the amphitheatre at the end of the 1st century AD.
From the 5th century AD, houses and cemeteries were built over the town’s monuments, and the site remained inhabited until the 15th century. The ancient economy was based on livestock farming, favoured by its position along the transhumance routes, and on agriculture.
The park, consisting of the theatre and amphitheatre sites with two separate entrances, was recently acquired by the Museo Nazionale d’Abruzzo under a ministerial decree of 2024, which included it in the organisation of state museums.
