About the museum
The Fratte archaeological area preserves traces of the oldest settlement of the city of Salerno, which arose on a tuff hill on the left bank of the Irno river. The first discoveries date to 1829 and 1835, when the first finds came to light during the construction of the Manifatture Cotoniere Meridionali. Traces of occupation go back as far as 2300 BC, while the settlement developed continuously from the 6th century BC with a community of Etruscan origin.
In the 4th century BC the site was occupied by the Samnites, who remained there until the second half of the 3rd century BC, when the area was abandoned. Renewed occupation is recorded only in Roman times, with the colony of Salerno. The site is considered one of the frontier centres of Etruscan presence in Campania, together with nearby Pontecagnano.
The area, covering about 4,500 m², is fenced and laid out as a park. Visitors can see the remains of an Etruscan temple, a large complex with basins and wells of uncertain function, an artisan zone with a cistern, settling basins for clay and a kiln, and eight monumental Samnite tombs on the western slope of the hill. The most significant grave goods are displayed in the Museo archeologico provinciale di Salerno.
