About the museum

The Provincial Archaeological Museum of Salerno was founded in 1927 and has been housed in the San Benedetto complex in the city's historic centre since 1964. It documents the whole province of Salerno, from prehistory to late antiquity.

In the open-air lapidarium and the viridarium, statues, reliefs and honorary bases are displayed, largely from Roman Salerno. The lower floor follows a chronological and territorial arrangement, with prehistoric finds from nearby caves, Iron Age grave goods, material from the Greek period, amber necklaces, bronze helmets and Samnite belts. Among the grave goods, the set from a 5th-century BC tomb at Roscigno stands out, with a silver kantharos and a crown of silver and gold, while a tomb excavated at Oliveto Citra in 1929 has been reconstructed in the display.

The upper floor is devoted to the city of Salerno, from the first settlement at Fratte to late antiquity, with grave goods, a large coin collection and the bronze head of Apollo recovered from the Gulf of Salerno in 1930.
