About the museum

The Museo diocesano di Salerno, dedicated to Saint Matthew, patron saint of the city, is housed in the former archiepiscopal seminary in Largo Plebiscito, beside the cathedral. It holds sacred art and codices from the territory of the archdiocese.

Among the most important pieces are the Exultet roll, an illuminated parchment from the high 13th century with the chant of the Easter Vigil, and the illuminated Pontificale of around 1180, made in Bologna for the cathedral of Salerno. The museum also preserves illuminated codices of the 13th and 14th centuries and historical documents of the 12th century.

The best-known work is the Salernitan ivory antependium, made up of 67 panels with scenes from the Old and New Testaments, datable to around 1090–1130 and attributed to artists of different origins. Some panels are now held in museums in London, New York, Paris and Budapest.
