About the museum
The Pinacoteca provinciale is housed in Palazzo Pinto, a 17th-century noble residence in the historic centre of Salerno, known for the characteristic Arco dei Pinto on its façade. The Pinto family, now extinct, was one of the wealthiest in the city. The palazzo once housed the Biblioteca provinciale.
The core of the collection was formed between 1927 and 1938 by recovering works from across the Province of Salerno. Purchases and bequests were added later; these merged with the Pinto collection, donated together with the palazzo. The picture gallery has been open to the public in this building since March 2001.
The displays cover paintings from the Renaissance to the early 20th century: from the 17th century there are works by Caracciolo, De Lioni and Rosa, from the 18th century canvases by Solimena and his circle, as well as works by local and foreign artists. Recent restorations have brought to light a rare flattened Catalan arch.
