About the museum

The archaeological area in via dell'Abbondanza preserves the remains of a wealthy Roman house of the imperial period, discovered in 2004 during building works in the centre of Pesaro and excavated until 2005. The building was constructed between the late 1st century BC and the early 1st century AD, was restored several times and was inhabited until at least the early 3rd century AD. The main entrance opened onto the cardo, a sign of the owner's rank.

The regular plan revolves around a peristyle with a partly preserved colonnade. The most remarkable features are the black-and-white mosaics, well preserved after a recent restoration; only small fragments of the frescoes survive, while stuccoes and rare terracotta decorations were also recovered, including a head of the sleeping Eros. In the 5th century AD, when one of the abandoned rooms was dug out, a bath complex with a hypocaust was built.

The site was opened to the public at the end of August 2015, based on a project by the Soprintendenza Archeologia delle Marche, the municipality of Pesaro and Sistema Museo. A metal walkway of about 22 metres with glass panels, installed in 2017–2018, guides visitors past the mosaics and allows them to reach the peristyle, the display cases and the baths. It is part of Pesaro's network of museums.
