About the museum

The Tempietto Rossiniano is located in the 18th-century Palazzo Olivieri in Pesaro, owned by the Fondazione Rossini. The palazzo was bought with part of the bequest that Gioachino Rossini left to the city of Pesaro, which he named his universal heir. The frescoes are by Gian Andrea Lazzarini and his pupils. The room preceding the Tempietto, the Sala dei Marmi (Hall of Marbles), tells the history of Pesaro from its origins, with surfaces that look like marble but are in fact scagliola mixed with paint. Next to it is a small study (studiolo) frescoed with religious and civic themes linked to peace.

The display cases hold autographs of Rossini’s works staged in Naples, including Elisabetta regina d’Inghilterra, Otello, Armida, La donna del lago and Maometto II, as well as Adina. There are also the Péchés de vieillesse, chamber pieces from the last phase of the composer’s life, and the orchestral version of the Petite messe solennelle. Among the early manuscripts stands out the quartet from Demetrio e Polibio, the oldest theatrical autograph by Rossini to have survived.

Letters to his parents, sixteen letters to the singer Domenico Donzelli, papers on the management of the Théâtre Italien in Paris, and the autograph collection of Lord St Davids are also preserved. Some items once displayed here, such as the composer’s honours and Gustave Doré’s painting of Rossini on his deathbed, are now at the Museo Nazionale Rossini.
