About the museum
The Museo comunale di storia della mezzadria “Sergio Anselmi” has been housed since 1978 in the complex of Santa Maria delle Grazie, among the hills of Senigallia. It documents life and work in the Marche countryside in the first half of the 20th century and the long history of sharecropping (mezzadria), an agricultural system based on the daily relationship between landowner and peasant, widespread in the Marche since the 14th and 15th centuries.
Access is through the Renaissance cloister of one wing of the former convent. The roughly two thousand works and tools are spread over thirty thematic rooms: olive presses, grain-sorting machines, tools for repairs, the kitchen, looms, hemp processing and, in the basement, a large cellar.
On the first floor the routes devoted to wheat, wine, maize, sugar beet and everyday life are accompanied by historic photographs by Mario Giacomelli and Mario Carafòli. The museum organises in-depth meetings on popular culture and old trades and, in summer, the series “Uomini e paesaggi” (Men and Landscapes), active since 2005 on history, the rural environment and the Adriatic Sea.
