About the museum
The Stazione dell’Arte is the contemporary art museum dedicated to the life and work of Maria Lai (1919–2013), housed in the former railway station of Ulassai. The Fondazione Stazione dell’Arte was established in 2004 at the wish of the artist and the municipality of Ulassai; the museum opened in 2006.
Maria Lai gave her works to her native village: the collection numbers over one hundred and forty works and includes sewn books, looms, ceramics, canvases and installations. The museum also houses sculptures and site-specific works in its indoor and outdoor spaces.
The museum is distinct from the open-air museum that extends through the village, which has free admission; it helps coordinate visits to that route. The museum offers creative workshops and educational activities for children.
