About the museum
The park extends over about 450 hectares behind Campiglia Marittima, in the Val di Cornia area, and brings together in a single route museums, mine galleries, a medieval village of miners and smelters, and nature trails. Copper, lead, silver and zinc were extracted from the underground of this area, and the route shows how extraction techniques changed over time.
The heart of the park is the Rocca San Silvestro, a ruined castle that dominated the mining valleys; the medieval village, which arose about a thousand years ago, preserves the remains of houses, a church, a cemetery and a noble quarter. The flotation plants of the last phase of activity, in the Valle Lanzi area, can also be read.
The visit is divided into several areas: at Temperino the Museo dell’archeologia e dei minerali (Museum of Archaeology and Minerals), in the ticket office building, introduces visitors to the Miniera del Temperino (Temperino Mine), which is walked with a helmet and a guide; at Pozzo Earle are the Museo delle Macchine Minerarie (Museum of Mining Machines) and the Museo dei Minatori (Museum of Miners), housed in the former canteen of the Morteo, and the Galleria Lanzi-Temperino, which is travelled aboard a small yellow train. Sculptures by Dario Bartolini are placed along the trails, and since 2024 there is also a Bike Skill Park.
