About the museum
The Museum of Sacred Art of Campiglia Marittima was inaugurated on 11 July 2003 in two rooms beneath the parish church of San Lorenzo, accessed from via della Libertà. The rooms are what remains of a medieval building. After the 16th century they were used as a burial place, and they were brought to light by an archaeological excavation in 1991 and then restored.
The museum gathers liturgical furnishings that belonged to the former Propositura, dating from the 16th to the 19th century. Among the materials on display are medieval stone finds, such as a 13th-century ophite (serpentine) column, a bronze Crucifix attributed to Antonio Susini, a pupil of Giambologna, and a complete set of vestments of French manufacture from the second half of the 17th century.
Also preserved is a group of reliquaries, including a 16th-century small shrine with the relic of the “milk of the Virgin”, silverware from the 17th to 19th centuries by the Livorno silversmith Spagna, and an Ecce Homo of 1652 by Alessandro Frigoni, known as Bazzicaluva.
