About the museum
The museum is housed in the church of San Michele Arcangelo, built in 1881 by the Compagnia della Misericordia. The building was abandoned shortly afterwards and used as a parish hall. In 1999, after a careful restoration that returned it to its original appearance, the Museo di Arte Sacra was set up, housing works from the parish and the local artistic heritage.
The collection includes paintings of the 17th and 18th centuries and two wooden statues attributed to Lorenzo di Pietro, known as il Vecchietta, depicting the Angel of the Annunciation and the Virgin Annunciate. Also on view is the 15th-century marble panel of the Madonna della Fonte degli Angeli by Andrea Guardi, restored in 1995.
The museum is in Suvereto, a village in the Val di Cornia known for its local produce and wine, which also hosts the Museo artistico della bambola with the Maria Micaelli collection.
