About the museum

The Rocca di Campiglia is a large walled monumental complex in the centre of Campiglia Marittima. The village is first mentioned in a deed of donation to the monastery of Santa Maria di Serena in 1004. In the 12th century the complex was home to the Della Gherardesca family, who turned Campiglia from a village of huts into a castle; later Pisan and Florentine garrisons were stationed there until the mid-16th century.

Archaeological excavations carried out since the nineties, under the scientific direction of Riccardo Francovich with the coordination of Giovanna Bianchi of the University of Siena, have brought to light finds of everyday and military life. After careful restoration the complex was opened on 7 June 2008, and the museum was set up in the old keep (cassero).

The route presents table ceramics, personal and devotional objects, games, an almost complete small breastplate (corazzina), a bacinet helmet, arrowheads and dart points, and a small collection of weapons. Among the finds is also a slab incised by a soldier in 1380. Information panels reconstruct the life and customs of civil and military society in medieval Tuscany.
