About the museum
The Museo del Minerale di Campiglia Marittima is housed in the Palazzo Pretorio, in the historic centre of the village. It opened in 1968 thanks to a group of citizens passionate about minerals and mining culture, who founded the Circolo Mineralogico Toscano, the first group of its kind in Italy.
The permanent exhibition mainly presents minerals extracted during the exploitation of the rich local deposits, but also specimens from the Costa degli Etruschi, such as ilvaite. Over the years the collection has grown to include specimens from other Italian regions, from North and South Africa and from South America, such as pyrite from Peru.
The museum also holds a small fragment of an asteroid in its underground floor.
