About the museum
The Museo civico “A. Cerutti” was founded in 1981 by the Gruppo Archeologico Reunia di Ragogna and is named after Antonio Cerutti, who directed excavations in the area. It is located on the ground floor of the municipal centre of San Giacomo, in via Roma, and is run by the municipality.
The natural history section illustrates the geomorphology of the Tagliamento morainic amphitheatre and the ecosystem of the river and of Lake Ragogna, with educational panels, herbaria, specimens of plants and animals arranged by habitat, habitat reconstructions and dioramas. A section on the environment and local economy also covers caves, karst phenomena, tuff quarries and coal mines.
The archaeological section opens with an illustrated introduction to human evolution and continues with material from the late Mesolithic to the Early Neolithic, and from the Roman period to the early Middle Ages. On display are flint tools collected in the fields around Lake Ragogna, a polished serpentine axe, a Roman fibula, Lombard bas-reliefs and coins from the Roman period to the Republic of Venice. Finds from the site of Ragogna castle, dating from the 12th to the 18th century, are not yet on display.
