About the museum
The castle of Ragogna stands in the hamlet of San Pietro, on a hill that controlled the Tagliamento ford. In Roman times the Castrum Reuniae stood here, defending the road towards Noricum; in the Lombard period the site was an important refuge. From the 12th century it was a fief of the Eppstein family, who in 1218 handed it over to the Ragogna family; in 1365 it was taken by the Patriarch of Aquileia, then passed to the Republic of Venice and in 1503 to the counts of Porcia.
The earthquake of 1511 and the fire of 1560 marked its decline; at the end of the 18th century it was abandoned and donated to the Comune. The complex has since been restored, and visitors can see the curtain walls with the north gate, the keep, the courtyard with the well, several towers and the rebuilt residential domus.
According to the documentation consulted, a permanent exhibition on the Tagliamento and its environmental and cultural role in the development of the area is also housed in the castle.
