About the museum
The Cappella dell’Annunziata stands at the entrance to Cori, along the road that linked the town to the Via Appia and to Rome, as an annex of the church of San Silvestro. It was commissioned by Cardinal Pedro Fernández de Frías, papal vicar and rector for Sabina and the province of Campagna e Marittima, who had it built from the second decade of the 15th century, as the inscription on the portal recalls: “De Spagna fuit qui me legerit”. Beside the door is the oldest surviving coat of arms of the Comune di Cori.
The walls and vault are covered by a cycle of late Gothic frescoes, with the Last Judgement on the entrance wall, which have earned the monument comparison with the Scrovegni Chapel. Between the 17th and 18th centuries the sacristy, the hermit’s cell, the bell tower and a new hermitage were added. The monument is managed by the Direzione regionale Musei nazionali Lazio.
