About the museum
The museum, opened in October 1995 as the Museo Archeologico Virtuale, was founded on the initiative of the Regione Lazio and the Comune di Norma (the municipality of Norma), to help visitors understand and explore the ancient city of Norba. It is in the historic centre, in the restored premises of the former town hall in Via della Liberazione.
The display design, by Lucia Di Noto and Stefania Quilici Gigli, proposes a “non-traditional” museum: a narrating voice tells the history of the city in the Republican age and of the research and finds. A model in the first room illustrates the urban layout of Norba, which sources record as founded in the 5th century BC and destroyed in 81 BC during the wars between Marius and Sulla. The following rooms present places of worship, temples and votive offerings, with casts of anatomical ex-votos and objects linked to the world of women, such as loom weights and terracotta figurines.
Alongside the panels, casts and models, the museum uses video stations with virtual reconstructions of streets, buildings and houses. A room with painted decoration and a Roman kitchen are reconstructed at full scale, with a working wooden loom. The upper floor is devoted to the walls, building techniques and water supply, while in the basement five restored rooms house an 18th-century oil store with the painted jars still in place.
