About the museum
The Museo del Cioccolato in Norma, in the province of Latina, tells the long journey of chocolate: from the Maya civilisation, which regarded it as the drink of the gods, to its arrival in Europe after Christopher Columbus, when it long remained a privilege of the imperial courts, down to its spread among ordinary people, which came only in more recent times.
The museum is run by a private company, MDC srl, and is directed by Mauro Prosseda. Alongside the exhibition route there is a sales area with traditional and seasonal chocolate products, including organic and gluten-free ones.
The route includes a section on cultivation, which illustrates the cacao plant (Theobroma cacao) and the stages of processing, from planting and harvesting to fermentation, drying, roasting and manufacture, with a video. Curiosities include period advertising prints, old packaging, scales and chocolate pots, often collected at markets across Europe. A more recent section presents the original machinery of an old chocolate factory.
