About the museum

The Pinacoteca di San Michele is in Pescia, in the former Benedictine monastery of San Michele Arcangelo, with its entrance from Piazza Matteotti. The monastery is documented from the 11th–12th century; in 1785, at the initiative of Grand Duke Pietro Leopoldo, it was converted into a Conservatorio for the education and upbringing of girls. In the 20th century it became a teacher-training institute, and today the complex houses the state high school “Carlo Lorenzini”, the parish of San Michele and the picture gallery.

The gallery opened on 14 March 2009 thanks to the Fondazione del Conservatorio di San Michele di Pescia, which carried out major work on the buildings and their heritage in order to return the Conservatorio and its assets to the citizens and include them in the city’s museum circuit.

The route runs through several rooms in historic spaces of the former monastery, such as the refectory of 1508 and the entrance of 1500. The gallery also gives access to the rooms above the church of San Michele, where a 16th-century stained-glass window showing Saint Michael defeating the dragon and the nuns’ wooden choir with a large canvas by Brunetto Ippoliti are preserved.
