About the museum
The idea of bringing together in one place “art objects ignored or forgotten in the churches and houses of the municipality” came from Cesare Stiavelli and was realised by his son Carlo, together with fellow citizen Luigi Mochi and the architect Giulio Bernardini. In September 1894 a small museum opened in some rooms of Palazzo Magnani, opposite Palazzo Galeotti.
In April 1898 the collection, which had meanwhile grown, was moved to Palazzo Galeotti to make more space. The palace underwent various alterations and suffered serious damage during the Second World War; after a long closure for safety reasons, the museum reopened on 14 November 2020, in the middle of the pandemic, to signal a new start.
Today the original core is open again: the monumental apartment on the piano nobile (main floor), restored under the supervision of the Florence heritage authority (Soprintendenza). The most significant works have been rehung there: all the paintings from the Uffizi held in the collections since the early 20th century, along with other works that recall the museum's ties to the Pescia area. The ticket is combined with the Museo Gipsoteca “Libero Andreotti”.
