About the museum
The palace was built between the late 18th and the early 19th century and took on its present appearance in 1839, when Pietrantonio Sipari bought it. An expression of the aristocratic architecture of the 18th and 19th centuries, with a late-Renaissance layout, it was declared a building of particular artistic and historical interest in 1967.
It was lived in without interruption by the Sipari family until 2006, the year of the death of Marchioness Maria Cristina Sipari, the last owner. It is the birthplace of the philosopher Benedetto Croce and the home of Erminio Sipari, founder and first president of the Parco Nazionale d’Abruzzo; between the late 19th and the early 20th century it also hosted Vittorio Emanuele III, Duke Amedeo d’Aosta and other personalities.
The Fondazione Erminio e Zel Sipari, established in 2005, looks after its conservation and has opened the house museum to guided tours, which include the historic rooms and the family’s documents and mementos. In 2021 and 2022 the façades and friezes of the palace were restored.
