About the museum

The park’s natural history museum and visitor centre were opened in 1969 in Pescasseroli, where the body that manages the protected area is also based. The museum is dedicated to the flora and fauna of the park and also houses the botanical garden and the Apennine arboretum.

The route comprises thematic sections with documents and materials on the environmental, geological and historical-cultural features of the area, and an archaeological section with finds from the Italic necropolis of Val Fondillo, near Opi, dating from the 7th to the 5th century BC.

The wildlife area presents animals typical of the park, such as the Marsican brown bear, red deer, roe deer and otter, including animals born in captivity or injured animals that could not survive in the wild. The botanical garden has an educational pond and the typical plants of the protected area. The complex also includes an educational area for school groups and scout groups, a conference room and a space for thematic exhibitions.
