About the museum

The museum opened to the public on 18 June 2022 and tells the story of San Donato Val di Comino, one of the most important places of free internment in Italy and the first in Lazio. Foreign Jewish internees arrived there in the summer of 1940. After the fall of fascism and the German militarisation of the Val di Comino, the village became the last inhabited place before the Gustav Line and was bombed from November 1943 to June 1944. The inhabitants, particularly the women, helped Jewish and Yugoslav internees and around a thousand Allied prisoners.

The museum occupies about 200 m² and is organised into eight thematic pavilions, with panels, touch screens, a virtual reality device, projections, display cases and a hologram. The route follows chronological order, from everyday life in the village at the beginning of the twentieth century to the Shoah on the Cassino front, the battles, the postwar period and the early years of the Republic.

Visitors can watch films on a loop and virtually leaf through documents, war diaries and unpublished writings. Objects that belonged to Jews, emigrants, German, Italian and Allied soldiers are on display. Since 2018 the museum has collaborated with the Holocaust Museum in Washington. Routes and workshops tailored to different age groups are offered to schools.
