About the museum
The house in Aliano is where the painter and writer Carlo Levi spent the period of internal exile (confino) imposed by the Fascist regime, between 1935 and 1936. That experience gave rise to the novel “Cristo si è fermato a Eboli” (Christ Stopped at Eboli), in which the village appears under the name of Gagliano.
The house has been restored and turned into a house museum with a multimedia display: a multivision system with slide projectors, mounted on the ceilings and controlled by a computer, brings period photographs of the house, the garden, the dog Barone and the Lucanian landscape to life on the white walls. The route also includes microfilms on the history of rural life and continues onto the terrace, where three painted corners are inspired by the surrounding panorama.
