About the museum
The museum was set up in 1987 in an old olive press beneath the house where Carlo Levi lived in internal exile between 1935 and 1936, an experience that gave rise to the novel “Christ Stopped at Eboli”. It is part of the Parco Letterario “Carlo Levi” in Aliano, together with the house of internal exile and the picture gallery.
The rooms display the tools of Lucanian peasant life: farm implements, crockery, lamps, braziers and harness, as well as objects linked to the ancient production of oil, milking and cheese-making. A reconstructed room with a bed and cradle shows the interior of a typical peasant home, immersing visitors in the period when Levi lived alongside the village's farmers.
