About the museum
The museum is set up in the restored Palazzo Morteo, a 17th-century building in the centre of Aliano. It holds letters, documents and drawings from the period when Carlo Levi, doctor, writer and painter, was confined to the town between 1935 and 1936. Levi had taken part in the first resistance groups against fascism, and for this reason the provincial commission in Rome ordered his confinement to Aliano.
Among the works preserved are the original lithographs for “Cristo si è fermato a Eboli”, donated by the author himself. The book, published in 1945, recounts his experience among the peasants of Lucania. The picture gallery also houses paintings made during the confinement, first in Grassano and then in Aliano, and a permanent photographic exhibition that follows Levi's life from his birth to his funeral in Aliano.
The visit is part of the circuit of the Parco Letterario “Carlo Levi”, which also includes the Casa di confino and the Museo della civiltà contadina.
