About the museum
The museum was created in 2002, shortly after the death of the Faenza sculptor and ceramicist Carlo Zauli, at the wish of his family. It is a private institution located in the historic centre of Faenza.
The seat is the former workshop that Zauli took over in 1949, together with three fellow students, from the ceramicist Mario Morelli. The workshop occupied the old stables of the convent of San Francesco, beneath the bell tower of the church; over the years the artist turned it into a large sculpture studio. The museum still preserves the original rooms: the kiln room blackened by smoke, the clay cellar and the long forming room with the wall for large high reliefs.
The permanent collections are two: the collection dedicated to Carlo Zauli, a retrospective from his first ceramics of the 1950s in an archaic style to his sculptural research of the late 1980s, and a collection of works by contemporary artists, begun in 2004 with the donation by Mathieu Mercier and enriched every year. The museum also manages the artist's archive and promotes travelling exhibitions, artist residencies, lectures and educational programmes.
