About the museum
The house where Sandro Pertini, seventh President of the Italian Republic, was born stands in Stella San Giovanni, right behind the parish church. The building partly retains its original features, but it was divided into three apartments when his mother, Maria Muzio, widowed, decided to split it up in the hope of selling the parts separately.
After Pertini's death in 1990, some local people worked to keep his memory alive and in 1996 they founded the non-political, non-profit “Associazione Sandro Pertini di Stella”. The house is now owned by the Regione Liguria, which has entrusted its management to the association; the activity is sustained by members' contributions.
The museum occupies part of the first floor and holds original furnishings, the president's valuable collection of pipes, paintings, photographs, documents and memorabilia left over time by the family (Carla Voltolina), friends, artists and ordinary citizens. The association also looks after the Pertini family tomb and every year organises events, torchlight processions, walks, sports competitions and competitions for schools.
