About the museum

The Mazzotti factory’s museum collection was begun in 1964 by Giuseppe “Bepi” Mazzotti together with his friend Mario Fusco. It was reorganised in 1987 by the ceramics scholar Fulvio Maria Rosso, and on 3 October 1987 the museum was officially presented as the first ceramics museum in the area between Albisola and Savona. In 1995 the exhibition was reorganised by period: the beginnings of the activity, the second Futurism, the 1950s and contemporary artists. In 2002, on the initiative of Bepi and Tullio Mazzotti, the museum became a foundation.

The indoor hall follows a critical route that starts with nineteenth-century terracotta tableware and moves through the Art Deco ceramics of the early twentieth century, the production of Torido Mazzotti, the Futurism of the 1930s and the International Ceramics Meetings of 1954, with works by Lucio Fontana and Milena Milani. Other sections show the presence of artists at the factory in the second half of the twentieth century, design (from Alessandro Mendini’s work for Memphis in 1992 to the present) and Futurist reissues.

In 1999 the collection was extended to the factory garden, which became the Giardino Museo (Garden Museum): an open-air route of ceramic sculptures by more than forty artists, centred on the large crocodile made by Lucio Fontana in 1936.
