About the museum
Daniele Comboni was born in this house on 15 March 1831. The building lies in the Limonaia del Tesöl, where his parents worked as caretakers. A missionary and Catholic bishop, Comboni founded the Missionari Comboniani del Cuore di Gesù and the Pie Madri della Nigrizia; he died in Khartoum in 1881 and was canonised by Pope John Paul II on 5 October 2003.
Today the house is inhabited by a community of Comboni missionaries who welcome visitors and guests. Visitors can see the simple kitchen, the parents' room with the letters sent by Comboni, and the children's room on the upper floor, reached by a wooden staircase. Below the house, in the former woodshed, a small chapel has been created, with an olive-wood altar and works in wood by the South Tyrolean sculptor Paolo Mussner.
The visit is completed by the Museo delle curiosità, a brief introduction to the peoples and cultures of Africa in the places where Comboni worked, and by a multimedia route in which a first-person narrator retraces his life and spirituality: the years in Limone, his training at the institute of Don Nicola Mazza, his first journey to Africa, the “Piano per la rigenerazione dell'Africa” (Plan for the Regeneration of Africa) and his death. A walk along the panoramic path behind the house and through the garden of the limonaia closes the visit.
