About the museum
The museum is located in Via di Settebagni, at the Centro superiore ricerche e prove autoveicoli e dispositivi of the Ministero delle infrastrutture e dei trasporti. It was reopened in a new form on 15 June 2019 and was opened to the public again immediately afterwards. The vehicles were conservatively restored with the support of the Automotoclub Storico Italiano.
The collections illustrate the evolution of motor transport and its regulation: cars and motorcycles, buses, vehicle parts and historical documents such as number plates, vehicle registration booklets and the first rules on driving licences, as well as sections on heavy vehicles and engines.
Among the exhibits are a 1930s Fiat 508 Balilla, a Fiat 500 A “Topolino”, a Fiat 1900 official representation car and a unique 1967 prototype of the Alfa Romeo Montreal. The best-known item is the Fiat 130 involved in the ambush in Via Fani on 16 March 1978, in which Aldo Moro was kidnapped and five members of his escort were killed; it still bears the marks of the attack.
