About the museum
Castel Drena stands on a rocky spur above the gorge of the Rio Salagoni, on the edge of the boulder field of the Marocche, and overlooks the valleys of the Sarca and Cavedine. It was built in the 12th century, probably on the site of an earlier prehistoric settlement. Its first owners, the da Seiano family, used it to control the passage between Trento and Lake Garda, and its strategic position made it contested for a long time in the Middle Ages.
The complex is mainly Romanesque in style, with Gothic and 16th-century elements, and is defended by two curtain walls; inside are the remains of the small church of San Martino and the 27-metre keep. The Comune di Drena bought the castle in 1981 from the Fondazione d’Arco and had it restored between 1986 and 1989. In June 2018 a collapse affected the curtain wall, and in 2025 consolidation work began.
Inside, a permanent exhibition displays archaeological finds from different periods, and panels trace more than eight centuries of history; points of interest include the cistern and a display on medieval cooking. The rooms on the upper floor host exhibitions, educational activities and events.
