About the museum
Stenico Castle dominates from a rocky spur the approaches to the Giudicarie valleys, in a place inhabited since antiquity, perhaps already a refuge of the Alpine people of the Stoni, from whom the village is said to take its name. From the 13th century it was in the hands of the prince-bishops of Trento, who made it the residence of the captain of the Giudicarie and the political, administrative and judicial centre of the territory for centuries.
The oldest part is the so-called Torre della fame (Tower of Hunger), linked to the legend of prisoners left to starve to death. After the end of the bishops' principality the castle lost importance. Under Austrian rule it housed the tax and court offices; it later became a magistrates' court and a carabinieri barracks. Its decline became more marked from the 18th century, beginning with the Napoleonic occupation, and the first restoration work dates from 1910.
From 1973 the Autonomous Province of Trento began a long recovery, and today the castle is a branch of the Castello del Buonconsiglio. The route includes rooms with frescoes, furniture, paintings, weapons and antique tools from the museum's collections, an archaeological section devoted to local history, the Sala del Giudizio (Hall of Judgement) and the Stanza del Ferro (Iron Room). From the courtyard the chapel of San Martino can be seen. Exhibitions, concerts and cultural events are also held in the castle's gardens and spaces.
